Tastings

This Friday 21st May, 2010

From 5-8pm, we will run a tasting of 4 very special wines as follows:

Domaine George Michel Sauvignon Blanc - A Marlborough Sauvy with a difference. This is made by a French family who are still making wine in France. It has an unmistakable “Frenchness” about it, but still with NZ character as well…very refined - $22

Lamont Riesling - Fantastic…this wine was gleefully consumed by me on Xmas day. It’s from Central Otago, NZ, and unlike many NZ Rieslings, it isn’t so sweet at all, the residual sugar that is there being perceived as even less on the palate due to the terrific natural acidity...a multi-layered palate of beautiful floral notes, lime juice, lychee, apricot, and great freshness with zesty intensity and still with suppleness too - $29

Knots "Sheepshank" Shiraz 2006 - Out of the many wines that I've sampled in recent times, this Bendigo wine made by ex-Balgownie winemaker, Lindsay Ross, really stood out as something special, and I bought it not because I thought it that would appeal to a specific type of punter, but because I personally really liked it. It's different for an Aussie shiraz, being more savoury and with lovely stewed fruits of fig, prune & raisin, as well as fresher blackberry & pepper, which all melds well with the said savoury aspect - $29

Knots "The Bridge" Shiraz 2005 - A Heathcote Shiraz of real class. The vineyard is Lindsay Ross' own and is behind the famous Jasper Hill, but being more elevated, it is arguably in an even better position. The wine is fantastic and I think it has only recently turned another corner in it's ageing evolution, making it even more approachable. It's a complex wine with notes of port, fig, caramel, black pepper, herbs, subtle liquorice, firm tannins and good acid for longevity. It's drinking beautifully now but will live for a long time - $55

I hope you maybe able to make it to this FREE tasting, as the wines really do shine. There's never any obligation to buy, but the bottles are open and need to be used, so why not try them!

Come to one of our Friday night wine tastings and have a chat about the wines being offered. There's no obligation to buy but there is great service backed by knowledge, and a friendly smile & conversation. Want something more? The wines on tasting are always slightly cheaper on the night.

Apart from the usual Friday tastings, we also conduct more specific tastings, perhaps based on a theme or on wines from a specific country for example. These are tastings for small groups of aroun 12-18 people and generally require bookings. They are advertised via an email/postal list with no marketing propaganda attached!! The tastings may be free or could require a small fee (usually $10), depending on the tasting in question. Occasional Master Classes of higher end or of larger numbers of wines may cost more but you'll always know before making a booking.
